ELAC Uni-fi UB5 Slim Bookshelf Speaker

Elac Uni-Fi UB5

Pros:

  • Exceptional sound quality can offer you a true audiophile experience.
  • Great build quality and stylish exterior.
  • Quite an impressive bass for such small speakers.

Cons:

  • Require specific placement conditions for the best performance.
  • May not sound that good during the break-in time (the sound quality drastically improves after around 80-100 hours of breaking-in).
  • Quite pricey.

The Elac Uni-Fi UB5 loudspeakers are a combination of a couple of things. They come in slim cabinets with a stylish satin black finish. Each bookshelf speaker looks elegant and classy, and can organically blend into any interior since black is always in fashion.

The Uni-Fi 3-way loudspeakers by Elac feature 5.25-inch aluminum cone woofers, 1-inch soft dome tweeters, and 4-inch aluminum cone drivers for the midrange. They come with magnetic grilles (covered with fabric), so you will be able to hide the drivers if you wish to.

Measuring a bit more than 12 inches in height, the UB5s can make a wonderful stereo system for your work desk or a medium-sized room. Being rather compact, they serve as the surround speakers, delivering a sound that even audiophiles will be able to appreciate.

Who It’s For

These speakers by Elac are a compact audiophile model. Therefore, if you are in search of a great, potent sound but want something relatively small, these loudspeakers will be an ideal option for you.

This is definitely not an entry-level model, so the speakers will be more suitable for people who are not limited by budget.

Also, these speakers will be great for users who have enough space (and patience, probably) to set them up correctly. Keep in mind that this model won’t work perfectly just anywhere. It has some specific placement requirements, which some of us cannot provide due to the furnishing peculiarities of our homes.

Pros

The key thing we want to mention in our review is that these Elac speakers offer an exceptional performance (when positioned correctly, and we’ll talk about it later). They deliver a very balanced, smooth sound with clean highs and deep lows.

The Uni-Fi monitors offer a rather focused sound and represent the sounds in a very natural way. When using these speakers, you might discover some new depths of your old music favorites thanks to the detailed sounding.

The bass response is also surprisingly good. For such small speakers, the bass is impressively powerful and deep, which means you might not even need a subwoofer. This, of course, will depend on what you are going to use your UB5s for. Just keep in mind that their moderately sized woofers are capable of a very powerful performance.

Cons

What we would like to draw your attention to in this UB5 review are the placement requirements. The thing is, these loudspeakers will deliver an incredible sound quality only when positioned accordingly. They need to be placed at least 1 ft. from the back wall and from the sidewalls (if there are any nearby). More than 1 ft. will be even better.

Therefore, when positioned too close to the walls, the speakers might not sound that great.

Also, they might not sound that good during the break-in time. We find this model to be a little bit too harsh and loud at first. However, after approximately 80 hours of use, the drivers loosen up a little, and the sound transforms into pure awesome.

Our Verdict

ELAC-Uni-fi-UB5-Slim-Bookshelf-SpeakerThe Elac Uni-Fi UB5 is most likely to capture your heart, even if you’re a demanding audiophile. Make sure to position the speakers properly, and you will be able to enjoy an incredible sound for hours.
