KEF Q100 Bookshelf Speakers Review – Interesting Design & Awesome Black Oak Color
Updated: August 2018
Excellent sound quality.
Work fine without a subwoofer.
Offer a very well-balanced sound.
Very nicely built.
Stylish black oak exterior.
The performance of these bookshelf speakers at the midrange may not sound deep and full enough.
The bass may not seem strong enough to some users.
The KEF Q100 bookshelf speakers can become a great addition to your home theater or sound system. Being 11.8 inches tall, they are powerful enough to fill a larger room with sound while still remaining fairly compact for a more limited living space.
The KEF Q100 speakers feature a black oak-styled finish, which makes them look fancy and elegant. The front grill is removable, so you can adjust their appearance to your personal preferences.
Concerning the tech details, the Q100 hide a 5.25-inch Uni-Q driver array inside, which offers a wide frequency range and a balanced stereo sound.
Who It’s For
The Q100 model by KEF is a great option for both larger rooms and small apartments, as it delivers powerful performance without taking up too much space.
We highly recommend these bookshelf loudspeakers for your home theater. They are amazing for this purpose. The sound is crisp and detailed no matter what you watch, whether it’s a light comedy or a loud thriller.
They are also suitable for casual listening and background music. However, if you are an audiophile or need the speakers for work, the KEF Q100 might not be enough for you, at least when used without a subwoofer.
Each Q100 speaker is capable of showing you more than just decent performance. With a rather wide frequency range, they provide a clean, balanced sound with no distortion.
Even when used without a subwoofer, this model can be suitable for casual listening. It has a very “warm” and even neutral sounding, without overpowering bass or vocals in the foreground. You can expect a well-balanced sound that is more on the softer side, which makes these loudspeakers an ideal option for your home theater. You can use them independently or pair them with the rest of your sound system. Either way, the result will be more than satisfactory.
Finally, these speakers look and feel nice and expensive. The dark oak finish makes them suitable for any interior, with that elegant subtle gloss and a removable grill for a more discreet look.
One important drawback we want to talk about in this review is how these speakers perform at the midrange. While being awesome for movies and when paired with a TV set, the Q100 lack depth and richness when used for music played at medium volumes. This might be fixed with some equalizer settings or adding a subwoofer. Speaking of which.
You might also need a subwoofer if you’re one of those people who enjoy listening to bassy music with many explosive elements. You see, these loudspeakers offer a rather neutral sounding in terms of bass, which is why they may need a little help and a supplementary equipment for a more intense bass.
We really appreciate the value these speakers offer for such a price (under $300). This is not a high-end model, but it still performs very well, especially at high volumes.
These speakers are suitable for casual home use or your home theater. They deliver a well-balanced sound with soft bass, which can be easily enhanced with the use of a subwoofer.
